My unit is on biographies and is designed for Grade 3 students, but it is not limited to that! Most of the biographies included on my site can be read to both younger and older students!
The purpose of my unit is to give students an opportunity to explore real stories about real people! It is meant to help them see different experiences and different perspectives.
It will hopefully give them a chance to connect and reflect on the stories they have read and heard.
It should help them develop the skill to look at various different genres, in this unit the focus is on biographies specifically, and determine what information they can find from them.
There will be opportunities for them to organize their understanding in graphic organizers, go on scavenger hunts for information and facts and conduct an interview as part of their research for a biography project.
You can find different resources and activities throughout my site to do with your young learner!
Keep an eye out for "Helpful Hints" throughout my site as well as "Activity Alerts!" to make it easier and more fun for your young learner.
So how does my unit follow the Department of Education Guidelines?
As teachers, we have a series of documents that serve as guidelines to planning our lessons and provide purpose for our lessons. My unit on biographies is a combination of English Language Arts and Social Studies for Grade 3. These documents are available for anyone to see online! If you would like to see where they come from, follow the instructions below to have a look at what your child is expected to learn during the school year and what teachers look at to guide their lesson planning.
The next step would be to click on the "English" programs button and select "Grade 3".
From here, you want to select "English Language Arts 3" or "Social Studies 3"
Lastly
Once you are on one of those pages, you will see on the righthand side, 2 guides.
You have two options here! You can look at the "At-a-Glance" one, which is a broader overview of the curriculum. The second is titled "Curriculum Documents." This one is a more detailed document.
Choose which one you would like to look at and click on it and a PDF will come up!
